Mr. John Joseph Mallon, age 97 years, passed away peacefully with family at his side in Bethammi Nursing Home on May 27, 2015, the 10th Anniversary of his wife Anne’s passing.

John was born in Port Arthur on July 20, 1917, the son of Michael and Kathleen Mallon.  On July 1, 1940, he married the love of his life Anne Mary Caruso, and together they raised 5 children with an enthusiastic love of both their Irish and Italian heritage.

He worked with Manitoba Pool Grain Elevators for over 47 years, retiring as General Manager and achieving the honour of being the longest serving employee in the history of the company.  He was a proud World War II Navy Veteran and was a member of the Branch #5 Royal Canadian Legion.

A sporting enthusiast, John loved curling, hockey, baseball and golf. John was a member of the Port Arthur Curling Club and Fort William Country Club.

John’s greatest love was for his family, especially his grandchildren and his great grandchildren, affectionately known as “Grandpa’s Greats”. John took great pleasure in following their activities and achievements. We will all miss his wonderful stories, his sense of humor, and his love of all that was Irish.

We have inherited a strong sense of family, and will treasure and pass on what we’ve learned from his positive attitude and unconditional love. He will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his children: Jack (Greer), Bill, Brian (Sharon), Paddy (Jan) and Leanne (Franco) Gorenszach; grandchildren: Sheri (Chris) Lobbecke, Kelly (Dianne) Mallon, Melissa (Darrell) Sdao, Rob Mallon (Janet Ford), Jason (Cathy) Mallon, Laurie (Jeff) Hebert, Becky (Mike) Forester, Katie (Kris) McGowen, Tracey (Sam) Maki, Kayla Boland, Anthony Gorenszach (Danielle Carroll) and Sherry Mey (Donavan); great grandchildren , twins Brendan and Ryan, Keegan and Gibson, Finley, Madeline, Meggie, Annie, Peter, Nathan, Quinten, Kaedan, Braeden, Jack and Jude.

He will also be dearly missed by his “adopted” family Vicki Shannon and David Adamson as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was predeceased by his wife Anne, great granddaughter Kayley Lobbecke, his parents, brother Mickey (Nellie) Mallon, sisters Alice (Vern) Marion, Mary (George) Tapp and step-brother T.J. Ryan.  Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2015, when family and friends will gather in St. Margaret’s R.C. Church for the Funeral Mass beginning at 11:00 a.m. celebrated by Reverend Ciaran Donnelly.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy to St. Joseph’s Foundation of Thunder Bay and Camp Quality would be appreciated.  Arrangements are in care of the Sargent & Son Funeral Directors, 21 North Court Street.

Online condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.
