Mr. John Matthew Tunkkari Sr., age 60 years, a resident of David Street passed away peacefully in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Hospice Unit on Friday, March 6, 2015.

John was born in Oula, Finland on April 7, 1954. In 1957, he came to Canada with his mother and settled in Thunder Bay. He attended Shuniah Vance Chapman and Lakeview High School. In 1978, John married Diane. Most of his working life, he was a member of the Carpenter’s Local 1669 as a foreman superintendent. He had a strong work ethic which he passed on to his sons. He enjoyed NAZ cars.

For 25 years, he camped at Thousand Lakes Resort in Upsala and enjoyed many good fishing experiences with his family. He was a loving father and became a papa to Owen, Carly, Hunter and Ryder which gave him untold joy.

John is survived by his loving wife Diane, sons John Jr. (Natalie) and Jeremy (Stacey), his grandchildren Owen and Carly, Tunkkari, Hunter and Ryder Tunkkari, his sister Susan Linden, as well as numerous cousins, aunts, uncles in Finland.

John was predeceased by his parents Helen and Aarre Lonnroth.

Cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A gathering will take place from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2015 in the reception room in the Waverly Park Towers, 405 Waverley St. All are welcome.
