It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father and grandfather, John Stokaluk on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 in Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre following a brief illness.
John was born on February 6, 1925 to Michael and Sofia Stokaluk and grew up in Port Arthur attending Cornwall Street and Hillcrest High Schools. He met Elizabeth Babiak in 1950 and the two were married in February 1951.
John and Elizabeth built their family home on Harold Street (now Hartland Street) in Port Arthur in 1955 in which he resided until his passing. They went on to have three daughters, Lynda, Carol and Mary. John was a plumber by trade and worked hard to earn his Master plumber's license and there wasn't a plumbing problem he couldn't fix. He was a member of Local 628: Plumbers and Pipefitters, joining in 1951 and worked on many construction sites over the years (along with doing the odd side job). He thought he retired in 1989 from Clow Darling, but starting in the early 1990's put his all of trade skills to use in completing all the plumbing in the construction of a new home and completing major upgrades in another home for his daughters.
John was an avid hunter and fisherman in his younger years and was happy to tell tales about his adventures. While the family was growing up there were many summers spent picking blueberries and camping at Kashabowie Lake with Dad teaching his daughters how to fish and enjoy a good round of cards. In his retirement he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and tending to his yard and garden.
John is survived by his daughters Lynda and Carol (Dowhaniuk), son-in-law Ken, and grandchildren Lauren and Brandon Dowhaniuk.
He was predeceased by his parents, wife Elizabeth, daughter Mary, and numerous cousins in the Stokaluk family.
Special thanks to Dr. Ek, Dr. Kennedy, and all nurses and staff in 2A who provided John with the greatest of care in his final days.
As per John's wishes, there will be no funeral service. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery at a later date. Should friends desire, donations may be made to the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society.
