Joseph Bieniek, age 80 years, a resident of Bethammi Nursing Home and formerly of Lakeshore Drive, passed away peacefully in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on Thursday, May 7, 2015 surrounded by his family and friends.

Joe came to Canada in the late 1950’s and settled in Thunder Bay because he had a brother here.  He worked as a cabinet maker.  Joe loved to make things and work with wood, and spent many years at Gateway and Port Arthur Ship Building Company.  His passion was the land and he worked tirelessly on his homestead on Lakeshore Drive growing extensive vegetable gardens, fruit trees, raising chickens and generally trying to beat back the wilderness from his oasis.  He also spent many years as a volunteer Firefighter with the Shuniah fire department.

Joe will be missed by his son Ray and his daughter Susan (Steve), their mother, and his grandchildren Natasha, Melissa, Sabrina, Rachel and Ian.

Joe was predeceased by all of his 4 siblings.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, presided by Rev. Msgr. P. M. Stilla, V.G. of St. Patrick’s Cathedral.  Interment in St. Andrews’s Catholic Cemetery will follow the reception.  Visitation for family and friends will begin one hour prior to the service. Should friends so desire, donations may be made in Joe’s memory to St. Joseph’s Foundation, designated to Bethammi.

Live Broadcast of the Funeral will be available on the Harbourview Funeral website.
