It is with great sadness that the family of Mr. Joze Vodopivec, age 79 years, announce his peaceful passing on Monday, March 19, 2018, on his namesake’s day (Saint Joseph) at St. Joseph’s Hospital, with family by his side.

Joe was born and raised in Rastez, Slovenia to parents Rosa and Joseph on March 29, 1938. He immigrated to Canada when he was 18 years old and settled in Fort William. Soon thereafter he entered the pulp and paper industry where he was employed until his retirement from Great Lakes Paper in 1999.

After meeting the love of his life, Albina Zupanc and returning with her to Canada, they established many lasting friendships and cherished memories in Thunder Bay, enjoying Yugoslavian picnics, roasting pigs and playing bocce or fishing year round with old and new friends. Not only did Joe enjoy cheering on his beloved Montreal Canadians, but was dedicated to his daily workouts at the Canada Games Complex. Lasting memories were also created travelling to his favourite places in the Caribbean, especially Cuba. He was treasured for his generous heart and quiet way, always willing to help out a person in need.

Joe will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by Albina, his wife of 51 years, daughter Diane Goegan (Chris), son Brian Vodopivec (Lauretta), and grandchildren Thomas, Michael, Jack and Sophie. He is also survived by sister Kristina and brother Dolphi in Slovenia. Joe was predeceased by his parents in Slovenia and brother Max from Austria.

A Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, March 23, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 Noon in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, with a reception to follow. Interment will take place in St. Andrew’s Cemetery following the luncheon.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a local charity of your choice.
