March 16, 1930 – November 25, 2014

It is with great sadness we announce that Juliao Tavares passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 25th at Bethammi Nursing Home.

Juliao’s memory will live forever in the hearts of his daughter Fatima (Brent); his son Emanuel; daughter-in-law Betty and grandson Sanchez; his sister Eduardo Cordeirio and family  and sisters-in-law Maria Algarvio and Carmelia Rombeiro and families.

He is predeceased by his beloved wife Maria Auxiladira, and son Paul Tavares.

Juliao was born on March 16, 1930 in S Jose, Ponta Delgada, S. Miguel, Acores.  At an early age, he learned the skills of an iron worker while working in the shipyards.

He immigrated to Canada in 1957 with the hopes of providing a better life for their families, and spear headed the immigration of other families to Canada.  He first worked for the railway for several years travelling throughout Northwestern, Ontario.  In 1961 he settled in Dryden, Ontario where he started to apprentice and become certified in a variety of trades that he would be employed at, allowing him to support his family.

Juliao was a plumber, heater, welder and tin smith.  He worked at the Dryden Paper Mill for over thirty years as a sheet metal worker.  Juliao was able to master any skill that he put his mind to.

Juliao was a proud father who always made sure his family was looked after.  He built his own home, hunted, and fished.  He taught all his family, the lesson of working hard for what you wanted, and no matter the pay, you did a good job.  He had a huge garden, and made his wine every year.

Juliao was definitely a blue collar worker during the day, but there was nothing more that he loved to do in this world, than to put on his best suit and go out dancing.

We want to thank all the staff at Bethammi Nursing home, especially all the nurses and personal support workers who provided compassionate care to our father in his last years of life.

Dad, we love you and miss you and will never forget you.  We are happy that you are now are in a place of peace.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 28, 2014 when family and friends will gather in Corpus Christi R.C. Church for the Funeral Mass beginning at 10:00 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Alan Albao.

Services will be complete in the church with the inurnment to take place at a later date.  In lieu of flowers memorials to the Ontario Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.  Arrangements are in care of the Sargent & Son Funeral Directors, 21 N. Court Street.

On-line condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.
