Julienne Courtine
We are sad to announce that Julienne (Detelder) Courtine passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, November 3, 2021, but deeply grateful that she was without pain, and surrounded by loved ones during her last moments.

Julienne was born in Paris on September 13, 1924 to Julien and Louise (Henry) Detelder. She grew up there with her three siblings (Julien, Louise and Henriette). Although she didn’t go to school for very long because she had to help at home, Julienne was a very intelligent person: always loving and giving generously, adapting easily, and courageously accepting new situations, always game to experience life’s adventures and always so very grateful for its numerous gifts. After surviving the traumas of WW 2, she married Lucien in 1950 and they spent 56 wonderful years together, raising their three daughters (Daniele, Michelle and Catherine), and working hard. One of Julienne’s favourite work was looking after children; one of them in particular became like her own daughter (Francoise). Julienne and Lucien loved discovering a new region of France every summer, enjoying each one’s unique specialties, landscapes and architecture. When they retired in 1980, they moved to their dream country home in Courbouzon, France, which they had spent many week-ends and holidays renovating. While retired, they loved visiting with family, gardening, playing Scrabble and cards, and travelling. They traveled to Italy, Norwe, England, within France, as well as every two years, to Canada to visit Catherine and her family until 2000. From 2001, Julienne took care of Lucien until his passing in 2006. She lived alone in her home until 2018, where she grew a few vegetables, but mostly the most beautiful roses, oleanders, geraniums and hydrangeas. She came to Thunder Bay for a visit, and ended up staying. Julienne touched the heart of every person she met.

Julienne will be lovingly remembered by her two remaining daughters and their families, her eight grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren and all of their families, her younger sister and her family, her brother-in-law and his family, and her many dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, her older sister, her husband, her daughter Michelle, and Francoise.
We would like to acknowledge the outpouring of love and support from our family and friends. We also thank the staff of St. Joseph’s and Bayshore Health Care. Special thanks to the wonderful in-home care providers.

A simple graveside service will be held on Monday, November 8, 2021 at 1:45 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery. Those unable to attend the service are invited to go to the Sargent & Son Facebook Page where a livestream of the service will be available to view. On-line condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.
