Katarina Lancok, at the grand age of 98, passed away at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on September 21, 2015.

Katarina was born in Podrecany, a small village in Slovakia, on June 14, 1917.  As a young woman she trained as a mid-wife.  She lived through World War Two in Slovakia, surviving the bombing of her home.

Shortly after the war she met Mike Lancok who had returned from Canada to look for a bride.  Three weeks later they were married and traveled across the Atlantic to start a new life in Canada.

She arrived in Port Arthur in 1948.  She was blessed with two daughters, Margaret and Marian and devoted her life to her family.  She was always busily working, and enjoyed gardening, preserving, baking, sewing, knitting and needlepoint.

Every year she planted flowers in her gardens and loved watching them grow.   Blueberry and mushroom picking was also a yearly ritual.  Katarina loved babies, and especially loved taking care of her grandson, Michael.  She loved animals and her cat Lily was her companion for the last fourteen years.  She was a long time member of Bethel Lutheran Church and faithfully attended Sunday services as long as she was able.

Katarina will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Margaret (David) and Marian, her grandson Michael, friends, and family living in Slovakia.  She is predeceased by her husband Mike Lancok, her parents Ondrej and Katarina Palicka, her siblings Ondrej, Mara, Jan, Pavel and Elena.

Thank you to all the caregivers who assisted her in her final years and to the staff on 2C at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital for making her last days as comfortable as possible.

Funeral services for the late Katarina Lancok will be held on Monday, September 28, 2015, at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of the Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 Cumberland St. N.

Visitation will begin one hour prior to service time. Interment will take place in Riverside Cemetery following the reception. If friends desire, donations may be made in Katarina’s memory to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation-NICU, Kitty Care, or to the charity of your choice.
