It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Katarzyna Karman, age 91, who was a resident of Grandview Lodge, in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Katarzyna was born on September 3, 1924 in Stanislawczyk, Poland (current-day Ukraine). She was taken from her family home when she was 18 years old, in order to work in a forced labour camp during the Second World War in Germany.
There, Katarzyna met her husband Jozef, got married, and had their only son Bogdan. After the war, she came to Canada to follow her husband Jozef, bringing their young son with her.
Katarzyna enjoyed living in Canada and being a Canadian. She loved living in the East End in Thunder Bay, where she had her family home. Katarzyna loved spending time with her family and cherished every moment with them. She knew she could always rely on her loving daughter-in-law, Halina for anything.
Katarzyna was especially proud of her two granddaughters Sally and Monica for whom she always had extra time.
Among the many things Katarzyna loved to do, gardening was by far her favourite hobby. She kept a very large garden which she lovingly and enthusiastically tended. She was also very well known for her tasty pierogies and cabbage rolls. Seven years ago, she was affected by a stroke, after which, she became a permanent resident of Grandview Lodge.
She appreciated the great care they gave her during her residency. Katarzyna is predeceased by her parents, husband Jozef, brothers and sisters, and her son Bogdan. She is survived by her daughter-in-law Halina, and her granddaughters Sally and Monica.
The family of Katarzyna would like to whole-heartedly thank Dr. Ross Johnson and the staff of Grandview Lodge for the loving care and attention they gave her, and Fr. Francisco Blazek for administering the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick shortly before she passed away.
Funeral services will be held on Friday May 8, 2015, when friends and family will gather for Liturgy in the Church of the Transfiguration at 1:00 pm celebrated by Rev. Vladimir Chvets. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Panachyda will be offered on Thursday evening at 7:00 pm in the Blake Funeral Chapel. If friends desire, memorials to Grandview Lodge would be appreciated.
Katarzyna Karman will be remembered in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday, June 12, 2016.
