Lychowyd Kateryna

We are sad to announce that Mrs. Kateryna Lychowyd, age 92 years of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, on the morning of Friday March 3, 2017. She was a beloved mother, Baba, aunt, friend and community member. The world has lost one of its great gems and now shines a little less bright. She will be deeply missed by those that loved her. Kateryna was a resident of Westfort in Thunder Bay for the past 60+ years. She was born in Wysocko, Ukraine on July 2nd, 1924. Her parents were Tatjana Kominko and Hrihorj Kominko. Kateryna survived through the hardships of WWII. She met and married her husband Teodor while in Germany. They moved to Canada at age 25 in 1950 arriving at the Halifax harbor with her eldest son. They first moved to Red Lake Ontario where her husband Teodor worked in the gold mine for five years. They relocated to Fort William where they built their house and created their life in Canada where Kateryna lived until the end of her life. Kateryna, or Kay, as she was affectionately known by many of those close to her, loved her family dearly and her home was always open for family and friends for a visit, a meal or a cup of tea. Kateryna was very involved in the Ukrainian community of Thunder Bay; she was a member of the League of Ukrainian Canadian Women and a longtime member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Ascension in Westfort until it closed. She loved her garden, was known to have the best potatoes, garlic, and most beautiful flowers. She loved cats, and had a special connection with her kitka that brought her great joy and laughter. Kay always liked to laugh and was a strong and brave woman who always took care of our family.

She is survived by her three sons; Stephan Lychowyd (Sandy Lychowyd), Basil Lychowyd (Donna Lagergren), and Paul Lychowyd. Her grandchildren Leah Lychowyd (Kevin Grattan), Darren Lychowyd (Kailynn Wilson), Dawn Anderson (John Anderson) and Troy Dvorak. Her great grandchildren Liam and Jade Anderson, and Victor and Elena Lychowyd, as well as other friends and family members.

Kateryna was predeceased by her mother Tatjana and father Hrihorj. Kateryna was also predeceased by her husband Teodor in 1990 and brother Adam, a resident of Ukraine.

Prayers (Panachyda) will be offered at the Blake Funeral Chapel on Tuesday March 7, 2017 at 7:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday March 8, 2017 leaving the Blake Funeral Chapel at 9:30 A.M. for mass at 10:00 A.M. in the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Transfiguration celebrated by Fr.
