It is with heavy hearts the family of Mrs. Krystyna Mikucki, age 80 years, announce her peaceful passing on March 30, 2018 at home with her family by her side.

Krystyna was born in the outskirts of Vilnius, Poland in 1938 which later became occupied by Russia. In 1958, she immigrated to Poland with her parents. Then, in 1961 her future husband Peter came to Poland to visit his parents and met his love. They were married shortly thereafter and came to Canada together in 1962 to live in Port Arthur which is now known as Thunder Bay.

Krystyna worked many different jobs before getting a housekeeping job at the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital, retiring in 2000. She was hard working and went above and beyond in everything that she did. Krystyna loved to cook and entertain at home, you would never leave her home with an empty stomach; she was the “hostess with the mostess”. One of her favourite hobbies was making Perogies and she was affectionately known as “Momma Perogie”. Krystyna was actively involved in the Polish community, she was a member and the President of the Ladies Circle at the Polish Hall on Court Street for many years, and was presented with numerous awards for her time and commitment to these endeavours.

Krystyna was a very social, outgoing and friendly person. She was a long time parishioner of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church where she rarely missed a Sunday service. Krystyna had an unbelievable sense of humour and loved to laugh and have fun. Her talents were many, she loved needle point, crochet, and had an amazing flower garden at her home that people would stop and admire. Another skill she was known for was her creative ability as a seamstress; she made beautiful clothes for her children and grandchildren and also enjoyed making home décor treasures.

She enjoyed time spent at the family camp at Dog Lake with many fond memories spent at the Lake with friends and family. She also took pleasure in camping, fishing and her most favourite passion of all was blueberry picking. After retiring Krystyna and Peter, for 11 years, enjoyed spending time in Arizona for the winter months. Krystyna loved her daughters and grandchildren with all her heart, they meant the world to her and she would have done anything for them. Krystyna was the most kind, caring and generous person with her family, friends and she touched the lives of many.

Krystyna will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband Peter, daughters Kerry Vacchiano (Nello), and Betty Romu, grandchildren Evan and Andie Romu. Her brother Wladyslaw, sister-in-law Ewa, her nephews, Adam (Alodie), Arthur Gulbinowicz, niece Barbara Hemsworth (Cody), great nephew August. Numerous other relatives in Canada and Europe also survive. Krystyna was predeceased by her father Wladyslaw, mother Zofia and brother Edmund Gulbinowicz.

Thank you to all the staff at Roseview and Dr. Ross Johnson; and most recently the staff at the NWLHIN-Home and Community Care, Lynda Roussel and Donald Hutchinson; the RN’s at St. Elizabeth, Caroline, Ashely and Erica and also the staff at Bayshore.

Services will be held on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 leaving the Harbourview Funeral Centre at 1:30 p.m. to St. Mary Our Lady Queen of Poland Church, 93 North Algoma Street, where the Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Krystian Sokal beginning at 2:00 p.m. A reception at Harbourview will follow the Mass with a private interment in St. Andrew’s Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, April 3rd from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre where the Vigil Service will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Should friends so desire, donations may be made in Krystyna’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
