p>Kurt Eric Markmann, age 90, resident of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully in St. Joseph's Hospice on February 17th, 2023. 

 

Born Dec. 12, 1932 in Hannover, Germany. He emigrated to Canada in 1951 aboard the SS Nelly. He worked all over Canada before ending up in Thunder Bay,  where he met his wife Marlene and married. 

 

Kurt was a carpenter by trade and worked for numerous construction companies and would often tell us stories of all the buildings he helped construct here.

 

His favorite pastime was working with his hands and in his garden. He enjoyed nature,  fishing at the cottage at Hawkeye lake and loved to spend time with family and special friend Anastasia with whom they would attend senior's dances and walks every week.

 

Predeceased by wife Marlene, parents Kurt and Martha Markmann, step mom Margaret, brother Helmut, sister-in-law Irmgard, in-laws Ralph and Ellen Poutanen and brother-in-law Ralph Poutanen Jr.

 

Lovingly remembered by daughter Susan (Jim Ehn), grandsons Andrew, John (Carlie), special friend Anastasia, sister in law Marion and nephews Paul, Allan and Neil and families. 

 

A special thank you to the ambulance paramedics, emergency dept doctors and staff, ICU team, Dr. McDonald, Staff on 2B. Also a special thank you to Dr. Miller and Dr. Migay and nursing staff at St. Joseph's Hospice for your dedication and care of him during his final weeks.

 

In accordance with Kurt's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family interment will be held at a later date.
