The family of Kurt Martell sadly announces his passing Saturday, October 28th after a courageous battle with cancer.

Kurt was born and raised in Current River where he loved to play hockey, golf, ski and go swimming at the P&G. He played all sports for the shear enjoyment of playing.

He attended Black Bay, Lakeview and St. Ignatius schools and graduated from the Film Production program at Confederation College. He worked in Toronto in the film industry before returning to Thunder Bay, the home that he loved.

Kurt came home to Thunder Bay to follow his destiny. He understood the pioneer spirit requires citizens to make a commitment to home and hearth. He lived in Thunder Bay with his eyes and heart aware of the world with all of its ills, evil and glory. Kurt was an optimist in a social warrior’s armor. He supported home, community, local art and culture. He spoke truth through his love of music and fellow citizens. Let his example lead us all towards a brighter, fairer and inclusive community.

He starred in and helped produce the film Zombie Massacre where he met the love of his life and partner Sara Boyer.

He was a volunteer DJ at LU Radio for the past 13 years and the author of the graphic novel Nowadays – Night Danger along with illustrator and partner Chris Merkley.

Kurt was a strong believer in freedom of speech, an advocate for human rights and a champion for what he believed in.

Kurt had many things he was passionate about. He loved music, film, disc golf and the outdoors. But above all those things he was the ultimate husband and father. Anyone who saw him with Sara, Marley and Indiana knew that he was truly content and that his love for them was infinite.

He is survived by his wife and soulmate Sara Boyer, his daughter Marley and his son Indiana; parents Dennis and Diane Martell; sisters Nikki Zens (Curtis) and nephews Nate and Kyle from Calgary; Shannon Etienne (Rob), nephew Logan and niece Peyton in Thunder Bay; sister-in-laws Amy and Jenny Boyer and their families; father-in-law Rene Rees Boyer; mother-in-law Patti Pooley-Boyer; numerous loving aunts, uncles, cousins and grandfather Paul Poirier.

There will be a celebration of Kurt’s life Friday, November 3, 2017 at the Current River Community Centre, 450 Dewe Avenue, from 1:00 until 4:00 pm. Music, photos and words will be shared in honour of Kurt by family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Kurt’s kids in form of a trust fund c/o Sara Boyer at the Bay Credit Union, 142 South Algoma Street, Thunder Bay or donations can also be made to LU Radio  www.luradio.ca/funddrive2017/ and a donation box will also be at the celebration of life.
