Laura Wuorela
January 29, 1914 – June 27, 2016

Laura Wuorela, aged 102, passed away peacefully in hospital on June 27, 2016.

Daughter of Matti and Anna Erickson, she was born and lived in Shabaqua for most of her life. Laura and her husband John built and operated Makinen’s General Store for many years, also selling gas and minnows.

After selling the store they remained nearby, selling minnows and pelts of beavers trapped by John. She also canvassed for the Cancer Society for many years.

Laura loved to knit for her family and she made the best donuts, piirakkas and blueberry pies. She was also an avid gardener and always surrounded by flowers, even at Roseview Manor, her home for the last four years. Our Mama or Mummu was treasured and she leaves each member of her loving family with countless precious memories.

She was predeceased by her parents, three sisters and brother Waino Erickson; husbands John Makinen and Lauri Wuorela; sons-in-law Archie Lempiala, Vern Lane and Stanley Maxwell; and niece Viola Galesloot. Survived by daughters Lillian Lane and Margaret Maxwell; grandchildren Cindy (Gary) Thompson, Cathie Wintoneak, Lloyd (Susan) Maxwell, Deborah (Dave) Watt, Donna (Earl) Mullin and Scott Maxwell; great-grandchildren Jeffrey, Jenna, Vanessa, Walker, Veronica, Devon, Jessalyn, Mitchell, Ashley and Tia.

A private family service will take place at Riverside Cemetery, led by Pastor Garry Heintz, Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Thank you to the staff of Roseview Manor for the years of excellent care.
