Lawrence Dunville

It is with great sadness that we said goodbye to our dad/poppa, Lawrence (Larry) Dunville on March 26, 2022, who passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at Southbridge Roseview.

Dad was born on December 11, 1924 in Waldron, Saskatchewan. He spent his early years helping his uncles on the family farm and then moved with his family to Fort William in 1940. He served as a corporal in the Royal Canadian Airforce from 1943 until 1946. His parents moved to Pass Lake in 1947, where they ran a store. There, he met the love of his life, May Brohm, and they were married on September 1, 1949. On September 17, 1949, they set sail for London, England where dad played hockey for the Earls Court Rangers for one year. After another year of playing hockey in Moncton, N.B. they moved back to Fort William, where he sold real estate and insurance for E.L.A. Smith Agencies and worked at Can Car. In 1954 mom and dad moved to Red Rock where he worked for St. Lawrence Corporation (Domtar) until his retirement in 1988, where he retired as Mill Accountant. Red Rock was their home for over 60 years where they raised four children and where they were pillars of the community. Dad served for seven years on the Red Rock Town Council and as Reeve for three years. He was one of the founding members of the North Shore Golf Course and belonged to many clubs and services.

Dad was a natural athlete and excelled at any sport that he tried. He played semi-pro hockey and was a playing coach for many hockey teams. He was a fantastic baseball & fastball player, golfer and curler, having won many titles on the North Shore throughout his life. He was inducted in the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 1991. The one thing that dad always carried through life was that he was a gentleman, in sports and in life. He had so much patience to pass onto his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Dad will be lovingly remembered by his children Elsie Christensen (Jorn), Les Dunville (Jane-Ann), Jim Dunville (Kathy) and Judy Kiviaho (Mark Anderson). “Poppa” will be missed by his six grandchildren, Joshua Dunville, Ian Dunville (Lyndsay), Joel Dunville (Caroline), Graham Dunville (Lisa), Kirsti Keetch (Chris), Karsten Kiviaho and by his six great grandchildren, Kai, Greyson and Quinn Keetch, Elliott, Clark and Sebastian Dunville; brother Harvey Dunville (June), sisters-in-law Tina Dunville, Nadia Dunville, Shirley Dunville and many nieces and nephews. Dad was predeceased by his parents, Wilfred and Olga Dunville, in-laws Jorgen and Anna Brohm, sister and brother-in-law, Helen & Fred DePiero, brothers, Gordon Dunville, Robert Dunville and Arthur Dunville and by nephews, Scott Dunville and Donald Dunville.

We would like to thank the amazing staff at Hilldale Gardens, Southbridge Roseview and Ambulatory Care at the TBRHSC for their wonderful care of our dad.

A celebration of our dad’s life will be held later this summer, on Friday, August 5, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 N. Cumberland Street. Donations made to the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame, the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital or a charity of your choice would be gratefully appreciated.
