The family of Luigi (Lou) Marcon sadly announce his passing on May 30, 2023 at Hogarth Riverview Manor in Thunder Bay, with family by his side.

Lou was born on May 28, 1935, in Fort William, ON to Angelo and Cella Marcon. His childhood was a vibrant one, spent in the East End of Fort William keeping up with his siblings and friends.

During his early years, Lou took a keen interest in the game of hockey developed his skills to an elite level, eventually achieving the pinnacle of professional hockey - the NHL and the Detroit Red Wings. Along the way, he had stops at the minor-pro level in Cincinnati, Edmonton, Pittsburgh, and Memphis enjoying many experiences, including championship and personal awards and forging friendships that would last his lifetime.

Upon completion of his playing days, Lou became a renowned coach in minor hockey in Thunder Bay, first as a player-coach with the Thunder Bay Twins, and later with the Thunder Bay Kings AAA program.

In 2000, Lou was inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame.

Away from the rink, Lou spent his career first as an employee and later as a partner in Nor-Shore Ready Mix in Thunder Bay until his retirement in 1993.

The real pride of his life was always his family, which he began building when he married his love, Dolores Mastrangelo, on September 20, 1960. Together they enjoyed 62 years of marriage.

Lou and Dolores’ family would eventually grow to include four daughters.

Upon returning to Thunder Bay following his hockey career, the Marcon’s moved into their understated Mountdale Avenue property where Lou would live until 2022 when it was no longer manageable for him.

While certainly having the means to enjoy a more lavish lifestyle, he chose to live his life in a simple, even minimalist, manner. The company with whom he shared a beer or a nice meal, or a scenic drive was infinitely more important than whether the meal was served on fine China, or the drive was in the finest of automobiles.

A houseful of family members gathered for Sunday burgers and sausages served on paper plates was more than good enough for him. And he enjoyed plenty of those.

Husband. Boss. Dad. Coach. Lou was called many things during his lifetime, but he most preferred “Papa.” You’d never quite see a twinkle in his eyes than when he was around his grandchildren. Whether it was a hockey rink, a swimming pool, lacrosse court or baseball diamond, he rarely missed an event. It was always special when “Mr. Marcon” was in the building, and many looked forward to seeing him and have a chance to have a quick chat.

Lou is survived and will be deeply missed by his daughters Evelyn (George), Jodi (David), and Keri (Darrin), son-in-law Charlie, his grandchildren Justin (Kailey), Brittany (Damian), Landon, Rachel, Sheldon (Sara), Nolan (Mackenzie) and Evan, and great-grandchildren Rhett, Griffin and Brody.

He is predeceased by his parents, wife Dolores, daughter Tammy, grandson Shawn, and numerous siblings.

Cremation has taken place.

A celebration of Lou’s life will be held on Saturday June 10, 11:00am at St. Agnes Church, 1019 Brown Street, Thunder Bay. A reception will follow where a light lunch will be offered, also at the Church.

If friends so desire, a donation to the Boys and Girls Club of Thunder Bay or PRO Kids Thunder Bay would be appreciated.
