It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we the family of Margaret Chrislina Mary McKay announce the passing of our best friend, wife, mother, grandmother on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 with her husband by her side.

Margaret was born on April 8, 1938 to parents Charles and Mary Cummings and was the youngest of three children. Margaret was a lifelong resident of Thunder Bay. She met the love of her life at an early age and married George McKay on August 18, 1956. From that day on our mother’s devotion was her family. She was hard worker and a perfectionist of everything in life, she never changed from start to finish. Gardening was a passion that she took great pride in, she had a green thumb and anyone who drove by her home could attest to that. A day would not go by without a phone call to us children, just to say hi and to hear our voices. Margaret and George travelled from coast to coast in North America in the motor home in their younger years, making stops at several music festivals with family and friends, which held great memories and laughs for many years. No Christmas will ever be the same compared to the details she brought to us kids. She loved to camp especially the bonfires, we will always have fire but without Mom, there will be no spark.

In mom’s later years, music was still a passion bringing them to many musical venues and along the way making many great friends. Mom started her working career at a young age starting at Roodles Restaurant as a waitress, Kemp Fisheries where she filleted fish, Eaton Company as a shipper and receiver where she was employed for 28 years. Margaret ended her working career at the Port Arthur General Hospital as a housekeeper. Mom was a lifetime member of St. Stephens Church and held God dear to her heart.

Margaret is survived by her loving husband of 60 wonderful years George, her children Janis (Brian) Ahonen, Bonnie (Paul) Hutton, Gina (Dan) Rogers, George (Shelley), her grandchildren Jennifer, Paul, Danny, Ryanne, Miranda, Jessie, George, Gillian and Rachel, her great grandchildren Deven, Colten, Ryder, Cooper and Ally, a special niece known as a 4th daughter Robin Ratz, as well as a special friend Frances McKay. Margaret was predeceased by parents Charles and Mary Cummings, brothers Herman and Hartley, in-laws George and Edna McKay.

Mom was an amazing person, who taught us all the true meaning of love and it was an absolute privilege to call her our mom and she will forever remain in our hearts. Rest in Peace, Mom. We love you.

A Memorial Service for Margaret will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 In the Chapel of Sargent & Son Funeral Home, 21 N. Court Street with Rev. Canon Ed Swayze presiding. Reception to follow at the Current River Recreation Centre (450 Dewe Avenue). A visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, October 17, 2016 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at St. Stephen The Martyr Anglican Church, 494 Leslie Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Northern Cancer Fund or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Online condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.
