It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Maria Kowalenko (nee Brygidyr) age 94, on October 11, 2018. “Baba” as she was known to her family and friends, passed away peacefully at Sunnybrook Hospital with her daughter, Sonya at her side. Baba was born on July 16, 1924 in Zamość Poland where she was raised in the Ukrainian tradition. She often shared fond memories of growing up on the farm, enjoying the fruits of their labour, especially the cherries from the family orchards, and riding horseback while herding the animals. Her dream was a career in agriculture.

After the devastation of World War II, at the age of 24, Baba found freedom and a home in Canada, a place she loved dearly. She settled in Thunder Bay, met the love of her life Paul, and raised her family. Prior to having children, Baba enjoyed various jobs. She especially loved working in a bush camp as a cook. However, her first love was her home and family. Her door was always open to her neighbours and many friends. Laughter, bountiful hospitality, Ukrainian food, music and friendships were most cherished. When invited to parties, she would cook for days, making sure that everyone had enough perogies, and cabbage rolls to last a lifetime. Baba always put others first. She met life's challenges with humour, determination, and grace. She will remain the standard for her family to live by forever.

Baba was predeceased by her granddaughter, Lindsay Stewart. Left to grieve are; Paul, her devoted husband of 67 years; her loving daughters Liz Stewart (Pat) of Ottawa and Sonya Kowalenko (Bill Carter) of Toronto, and her cherished grandchildren: Alex, Mitchell, Sasha (Zolotko), and Laura.

A very special heartfelt thank you to Claire and Gaye, who made it possible for Baba and Deedo to stay in their own home as long as they were able. The past 4 years were spent with Sonya and her family in Toronto.

Baba had so many to thank for the loving care received in her last years. Thank you to our wonderful caregivers, Angel Josie, Connie, Jessica, Judy, Diane, Samira and Luz. Thank you to all the special staff at Meighen Manor, for their kindness, compassion and care. Thank you to the staff at Mt. Sinai and Sunnybrook hospital in Toronto.

Both the Visitation and the Funeral Service will be held at Jenkens Funeral Home, 226 Syndicate Avenue South, Thunder Bay, ON P7E 1C8. Visitation will be on Friday, October 19, 2018 from 5 - 7 pm and the Funeral Service will be Saturday, October 20 at 9 am. Interment at Riverside Cemetery, followed by Reception at Jenkens Funeral Home.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in Maria’s memory to The Salvation Army.
