Maria Tavares

Mrs. Maria de Lurdes Nunes (nee Martins) Tavares, age of 74 years, resident of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully at Hogarth Riverview Manor on January 1, 2019. 

Born on March 12, 1944 in Celorico da Beira, Portugal. She immigrated to Canada at the age of 15 with her parents in 1961. Maria married the love of her life Antonio Tavares in 1964 and had one child Isaac Tavares in 1966.

Maria practiced a healthy lifestyle which included yoga, walking and natural remedies. She loved to read, meditate, garden, bake and cook. Kale, yogurt and Portuguese cuisine being her favourites. Maria loved spending time with family and most of all, with her two grandchildren.

Maria was an active member in the Catholic Women’s League and was a parishioner at St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church.

Maria will be sadly missed by her husband Antonio, son Isaac (Michelle), grandchildren Cassandra (Leonard), Alexander (Georgia), sister Annunciacao (Ann; Jose) Alvaro, and her nieces, nephews and cousins. Maria was predeceased by her parents Jose and Urbana Martins and infant sister Zulmira. 

Visitation will be held on Monday, January 7, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. at Sargent and Son Funeral Home with prayers commencing at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church at 9:30 a.m. Internment is to follow at St. Andrew’s Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay would be greatly appreciated.
