Mrs. Maria Vieira Figueira, age 90 years, peacefully passed away on September 27th, 2021, at Hogarth Riverview Manor. Maria was born in Madeira, Portugal on October 14th, 1930. She immigrated to Thunder Bay in 1971 with her children to join her husband, Antonio Figueira.
Maria was a homemaker who took immense pride in her family and nurturing bonds that will continue to thrive. Her family was everything to her and she cherished having them together, which, as in most Portuguese families, centered around the kitchen. Her grandchildren will treasure the memories of grandma’s freshly made bread, bolo do caco, and milho – as no one can make it quite like she did. Maria enjoyed traveling and seeing new destinations with her husband. When at home, she also took pleasure tending to flowers in her garden.
Maria is survived by her seven children: Eugénia (Mario Batista); Helena (Manuel Neves); Maria; Nazaré (the late Antonio Arruda); Ana (Luis Martins); Margarida; José (Patricia); twelve grandchildren: Mario (Ana); Manuel (Clara); Elizabeth (Tony); Irene; Miguel (Catarina); Chana; Andre (Robyn); Dinis; Alicia (Mitchell); Katrina; Samantha; Amber; ten great grandchildren: Enrique; Mercedes; Lucas; Beatriz; Mayla; Nash; Cameron; Maria Luisa; Eleanor; Emersyn; as well as many nieces and nephews in Canada and Portugal.
Maria is predeceased by her husband Antonio Figueira; parents João and Eugénia Vieira; and brother João Vieira.
A heartfelt thank you to the front-line staff at 5N Hogarth Riverview Manor for the exceptional care our mother received. In her time there, Maria was treated like family, as we witnessed from the way she was lovingly referred to as "Mama". You will forever be in our hearts.
