The family of Marilyn Jeanne Hurrell announce her passing on Wednesday May 17th, 2017 at TBRHSC.

Marilyn was born to Vern and Paulyne Sims on April 2, 1944. She attended Pine Street School and PACI, proud to excel at academics and cheerleading. She achieved her BA in Mathematics from Lakehead University in 1968 with further accreditations from York and Queen’s University in later years. She was a teacher for life; not only in her career as a high school teacher of mathematics and english in the Public School Board, but extending that love of learning before and after her retirement in 1999 into ski instructing, tutoring, lecturing at Lakehead University and as Editor of the OAME Ontario Mathematics Gazette.

Marilyn contributed to the efforts of many volunteer organizations over the decades. Her most memorable work has come through participation on the Wesway Board of Directors, volunteer work with TBRHSC, St. Joseph’s Care Group, the Alzheimer Society and the Canadian Diabetes Association amongst others. She was active with the set up and chairing of many events including the Ontario Math Olympics, OFSAA Provincial Skiing Championships and the SSSAA Alpine Ski League.

Always up for adventure and plans, Marilyn continually had us on our toes. From getting her motorcycle licence to taking incredible trips over the past 12 years to New Zealand, Vancouver, Alaska, Ireland and the Maritimes, she taught us to go after the things you want.

Marilyn was happiest at family and friends’ places on Lake Superior, on the golf course, at a Thunderwolves hockey game with family members by her side, digging in the garden, playing bridge, lunch dates, book clubs, chatting on the phone, hosting dinner parties and spending time and holidays with her family. What most particularly captured her heart was watching her grandchildren succeed at music and sports or spending special time with them.

Marilyn is predeceased by her parents Vern and Paulyne Sims, her long-time partner Roger Tremblay and brother-in-law Bill Mokomela.

Marilyn is survived, and will be deeply missed by her children Stephen (Janice), Lynn (Barry George) and grandchildren Erica, Meagan and William. She is also survived by her siblings Joan (George) Shepherd, Judy Mokomela, Richard (Ruth) Sims and John (Debbie) Sims, along with amazing nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, neighbours and friends who all had a special place in her heart. Of particular fondness is her Aunt Jeanne Kissack in London, ON.

The family would like to thank all of the dedicated nurses and staff in ICU at the TBRHSC who cared for Marilyn. Special thank you to Dr. Stallwood and Dr. Roussos for their patience, tenacity and care.

A celebration of Marilyn’s life will be held at St. Paul’s United Church at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2017. Donations would be appreciated for TBRHS Foundation – ICU Fund, Wesway or a charity of your choice.

Hug your loved ones a little closer, volunteer your time, follow through with your plans and make a toast to enduring friendships and time spent with others. This is what Marilyn would wish for you.
