It is with heavy hearts as we announce the passing of our dear Isi (Dad) Martti Henrikki Hyvärinen at the TBRHSC - ICU on May 2, 2022 at the age of 87. He passed away at 11:30 p.m. with his family by his side.
Isi was born on December 15, 1934 in Leppävirta, Finland. He worked as a fisherman upon coming to Canada in 1957, carpentry and then in 1962 he began working in the wood industry. In 1969 he moved his family to Nakina, Ontario where he enjoyed the rest of his life working in the bush until retiring in 1999 as a delimber operator; previous to that he was a cutter and a skidder operator and got his son a job and taught him everything he knew. He took him under his wing and started him in his career.
He is survived by his loving wife Pia, whom he married on August 6, 1961 and enjoyed 60 blissful years together. They had 4 children, Seppo (Nancy) of Longlac, Hannele (Tom) of Nakina and Heidi and Marcie of Nakina. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Chem, Shane, Shannon, Tj and Jenny and 8 great grandchildren, Owen, Lauren, Osten, Benjamin, Gracie, Devin, Raiden and Gage and will be deeply missed by them all. They were his pride and joy along with his whole family. He is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces in Finland and cousins in Thunder Bay.
He was predeceased by his parents Veikko and Erikka Hyvärinen of Finland, his brother Antero of Finland and brother Vaino of Thunder Bay.
A special thank you goes out to the staff at the ICU who went above and beyond caring for our Isi until his final day. Thank you also goes out to Dr. Zufelt, Dr. Desruisseaux and staff at Geraldton District Hospital for all the special care they gave throughout the years. Thank you also goes out to Dr. Stallwood, Dr. Roberto, Dr. Scott, Dr. Lai, Dr. Prouse, Dr. Melton and Dr. Basir for all they have done for him throughout his lengthy illness. We will never forget what you have done for him.
As per Isi ‘s wishes, a private celebration of life will take place on a later date with his family. Cremation will take place on Sunday, May 8, 2022. He’s up in heaven now with his precious Miukku Kissu Blossom who was his pride and joy and who went to heaven December 6, 2021 while Isi was in the hospital in Geraldton.
He left a huge hole in our hearts. We love you Isi, Rest in Peace, until we meet again, we’ll love you always and forever Mammi, Heidi, Marcie, Seppo and Hannele, xoxo.
