Mary D. Stecky (nee Robertson)

We are saddened to announce the passing of Mary D. Stecky (nee Robertson) on Saturday March 12, 2022 at the TBRHSC with family by her side. Mary was born in Aberdeen Scotland on May 28, 1934 and immigrated with her family to Canada in 1952, remaining here since.

In her early years in Port Arthur, she worked as a nurse’s aide in the P.A. General Hospital. This is where she met her future husband, when he got hit in the eye by a soccer ball and needed medical care. Walter and Mary dated and instead of returning to the UK with her family, her and Walter got married on May 8th 1954 and began their family. Their first born Kathie arrived in October 1955, followed by Glenn in 1957, Dee in 1959 and Allan in 1963.

Mary had a very full and rewarding life with included her family first, travel to her homeland to visit relatives, vacations across Europe, USA and Canada and also many hours spent at camp on Hawkeye Lake. She also dabbled in sewing, knitting and volunteer work. Her life continued to be enriched with the addition of her grandchildren and her great grandchildren, whom she loved more than life itself.

Mary is survived by her husband of almost 68 years, Walter. She is also survived by her son Allan, her daughter Dee Polowski (Stan), granddaughter Sarah Polowski (Callum), granddaughter Jessica Fiorito (Earl) and grandson Matthew Polowski (Annie). Finally, her most cherished gifts, her great grandchildren, Eli and Arisa.

She was predeceased by her daughter Kathie in November 1983 and her son Glenn in April 2006. She was also predeceased by her parents, her mother-in-law and all of her siblings.

In keeping with Mary’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

At this time, the family would like to thank the medical staff at the TBRHC who made her last few days and hours comfortable, specifically nurses Sara and Sherry Lynn on 3A. Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
