It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mike Shmanka at age 75 on Wednesday, Sept 11th, after a brief illness.

Mike was born in Thunder Bay and was employed as a Heavy Equipment Operator at Northern Wood Preservers for 39 years until it closed, making many long lasting friendships over the years. He then became a security guard for G4S, until he retired for health reasons.

Mike enjoyed hunting and fishing with close friend Rejean Pelletier as well as with his many other buddies. Mike's most treasured memories were fishing with his son Taylor.

His family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Kennedy, Dr. Hozapfel and nurses and staff of the cancer clinic, and Dr. Sellick and the palliative team, nurse Klaudia from Paramed and Crystal and Havyn from Health at Home. We are also very grateful to the nurses of 3A who showed compassion and care for Mike during his final hours.

Michael will be missed by his family; wife Debbie of 34 years, son Taylor (Rylie) and granddaughter Aubree, sister Ann Currie, brothers Nick and Maurice and sisters-in-law Denise Vienneau and Joy Brindley. Mike is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mike was predeceased by his parents William and Catherine, brother Joe, brother-in-law Don Currie, in-laws Nap and Fay Vienneau, as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends.

All those who knew Mike, knew him as a gentle giant and a kind soul.

A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday October 8, at the Oliver Road Recreation Center, from 1pm to 3pm, for family and friends.

Cremation has taken place, with a private family interment to be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences, Northern Cancer Fund, or your charity of choice would be appreciated.

Arrangements have been entrusted to EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street, at Algoma.
