Mr. Michel “Mitch” William Prairie, age 79 years, passed away peacefully with his family by his side in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on Friday, June 24, 2016.
Mitch was born on March 26, 1937 in Manitoba. He worked many years at the Abitibi Mill, Thunder Bay Division, retiring in 1991. Mitch was a master of all trades, always keeping busy with one project or another. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved hunting, fishing, camping and of course his Montreal Canadiens.
Mitch is survived by Mary, his loving wife of 43 years; daughters Yvette Forneri and Connie Grover; stepsons Don Varga (Linda), Mark Varga (Sherry), Gary Varga (Connie), Terry Varga (Lavonne) and Derrick Varga; stepdaughters Jane Brizard and Belinda Varga; brothers Amadie Prairie, Rene Prairie and Jules Prairie (Georgina); sisters Blanche Deschenes, Laura Petrynka and Claire Prairie; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Mitch was predeceased by his mom and dad, Emma and Hector Prairie; brothers Emil Prairie, Lawrence Prairie and Oscar Prairie.
As per Mitch’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Current River Community Centre, 450 Dewe Avenue, on Thursday, June 30, 2016 from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation-Northern Cancer Fund would be appreciated.
