Mikko Nyssonen
Mikko Oliver Nyyssonen, 70, began his final journey with his Lord and Saviour on January 19, 2021 after a courageous 5 year battle against aggressive Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Mikko was born on May 6, 1950 in Lahti, Finland, and grew up on the north side of Thunder Bay, previously Port Arthur. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Applied Science as a geological engineer (1974) and a Masters of engineering (1984) as a geotechnical engineer. He was a member of the Professional Engineers Ontario til his passing and had also been previously a member in BC and NWT.

His career took him to several parts of Ontario, BC and NWT. In the NWT, based out of Yellowknife, he worked for the Government of the NWT (Department of Transportation) and former Con Mine. Mikko finished his career in Brampton, ON, with Terraprobe Engineers, from which he retired in 2016.

Mikko loved hockey, playing in the minors, recreation and old timers league. He had a deep passion for music which shined through in his worship leadership in several churches and groups throughout his life. Mikko’s ministry started as a youth pastor/leader in his younger years and he was an active member of Saalem Church (Thunder Bay) and the Wilmot Centre Missionary Church (Petersburg, ON).

Mikko will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 45 years, Saara (née Uotila), children Erika Nyyssonen (Jay Bulckaert), Evie Pietila (John Pietila), Katrina Nyssonen and sister Vivian Sharp (Don Sharp). ’Ukki’ adored his 3 grandchildren Eeva, Jack and Leila. Mikko will also be missed by his large extended family in Canada, Finland and close friends and church families. He is predeceased by his parents Oliver and Eila Nyyssonen (née Kosonen).

A celebration of Mikko’s life, presided by Jarkko Ketola will take place at Harbourview Funeral Centre on January 29. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the celebration will be closed to the public but will be live streamed at 1:30pm EST. Please visit www.harbourviewfuneral.ca to view the service live or at a later time.
