The family of Nancy Dee DeRusha is deeply saddened to announce her tragic passing on January 19, 2023 at age 61. Nancy was born in Ishpeming, Michigan on Valentine’s Day, 1961.  At age 14, she moved to Thunder Bay with her mother and siblings and attended Selkirk High School.  Nancy held several professional roles including baggage handler and flag girl, but her starring role was always lovable friend and family member.

Although she left us too soon, Nancy realized her greatest ambition in life: being a mother.  In her 20’s she met Francis Nistico and decided to conceive her 2 children with him. She lovingly raised her kids as a single mother with the support of her devoted mom, Rose, loyal sister Sue, and doting partner of 22 years, Franklin George Ouelette. It was always to others that Nancy gave every bit of the love, passion and strength she had in her heart.

Nancy was a unique and playful spirit that was overflowing with kindness and compassion.  She had a truly remarkable way of drawing people and animals to her.  Her many passions included Rock n’ Roll (esp. Elvis), movies (esp. sci fi/horror), and animals. Despite suffering from chronic pain and depression most of her life, Nancy had a positive outlook and shared many joyful laughs and heartfelt moments with those around her. Though devastated, her family takes great solace in knowing she is finally without pain.  Nancy was a devoted mother, a patient and wise teacher, and a beautiful soul filled with grace.  Her memory will forever be treasured in our hearts.

Nancy died at TBRHSC with family at her side, from complications related to a previous injury. Nancy was predeceased by her grandparents, the father of her children, nephew Cory, partner Frank, brother Al, mother Rosema Ann DeRusha (née Roy), father Dennis DeRusha, and cherished fur-babies Keeper and Muffy.

Nancy is survived by her beloved children, Billy DeRusha and Bobbie Dee-Ann DeRusha, now Aurora Rose (Andréa Blais), brother Jay and sister Suzanne DeRusha, and numerous others.  Many celebrations of life will be held privately, and her final wishes will be honored.  Yes, it’s time for you to fly, Mom.  We love you.  Donations can be made in Nancy’s name to The United Way.
