Nathan Mawakeesic, 66 years, of Thunder Bay, Ontario, beloved husband and best friend of Lorna Morgan for over 25 years, passed away peacefully surrounded by the ones he laughed with, lived for, and loved on August 12, 2015 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

He was also predeceased by his parents Cornelius and Dania Mawakeesic and his brother Wesley Mawakeesic.

Nathan was born in Sandy Lake, Ontario in November 11, 1948 where he lived most of his young life.  He loved music and enjoyed singing and playing his guitar with his brothers.

Besides his common-law wife, Nathan is survived by his sisters Mary Linklater, Joanne Mawakeesic, Melissa Fiddler, brothers Brian Mawakeesic, Glen Mawakeesic (Mary Rhoda Mawakeesic), Harry Mawakeesic and Paul Mawakeesic (Janie Mawakeesic), nephews Cain Linklater, Johnnie Mawakeesic, William Mawakeesic nieces Trish Mawakeesic, Cheyanne Linklater, Eleanor Mawakeesic, Justeen Mawakeesic, Sonja Mawakeesic, daughters Sally Morgan, Rachael Anishinabe, adopted son Rheal Twance, his grandchildren, Brianna, Lanisha, Kristina, Cody, Devon and Paul Jr, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Chief and Council and the Band members of Keewaywin First Nation and also to the Chief and Council and the Band members of Sandy Lake First Nation. We thank God for the gift of Nathan’s life and the blessing of the time we spent with him. Thanks!

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, August 19, 2015 in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, presided by Pastors Len and Betty Hjalmarson of First Baptist Church. 

Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.  Following the reception, Nathan will be escorted by his family to Sandy Lake where a Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 20 in the United Church, presided by Rev. Sanadius Fiddler.  Interment will follow in the Sandy Lake Ghost Point Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations in Nathan’s memory to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
