Mrs. Nina Sas, age 96 years, a resident of Thunder Bay, passed peacefully in St. Joseph’s Hospital on September 23, 2016.

Nina was born in Peredmirka, Ukraine on January 16, 1920. During World War 2 Nina was taken to Germany by the Nazis. She met her husband Teodor and married before the war ended. When the war ended in 1945, they were in a refugee camp where their two sons Edward and Peter were born. Later they immigrated to Port Arthur in 1949.

After working various jobs, Nina started working at Port Arthur General Hospital until she retired in 1985. Nina was an active member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and was involved in theatre and choir.

Nina enjoyed her retirement years gardening, travelling, and going out for coffee. She had a wide range of friends she socialized with.

Nina will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her son Edward, Tim, Karly, Brenden, Kylie Reese, son Peter, Ian Koa, Caelyn, Dean, Veronica, Alex, and Elaine, along with nieces, nephews and other relatives surviving.

Nina was predeceased by her husband Teodor in 1980, her sister Anastatia, and later she lost her niece to cancer.

Funeral Services for Nina will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 in the Chapel of the Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, presided by Rev. Msgr. P. M. Stilla, V. G. of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Visitation for family and friends will start at 11:30 a.m. If friends so desire, donations in Nina’s memory may be made to a charity of choice.
