A kind and gentle man, Olavi Matti Niemi, age 90 years, passed away peacefully after a brief illness in hospital with family by his side on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011.
Olavi was born on Oct. 25, 1920 in Kauhajoki, Finland and came to Canada in 1926. He enjoyed driving a taxi for 50 years with Oikonen's Taxi. After his retirement, family, home and summer camp were his main interests.
Survived by his daughters Margaret, Audrey (Doug) Woodbeck and Elaine; grandson Richard Woodbeck (Erin Ferriolo) and buddy Mickey. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Predeceased by his wife Siiri, sister Eila Heinaaho, brother Onni and parents Jenny and Nestor.
Funeral services for the late Mr. Olavi Niemi will be held on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at 11 a.m. in the Everest Funeral Chapel, 299 Waverley St. at Algoma. Interment to follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to service time.
