It is with great sadness that the family of Peter Spithoff, former resident and “Mr. Good Vibes” of Hogarth Riverview Manor, passed away peacefully with family by his side at TBRHSC on June 23rd, 2022, at the age of 61.

Peter was born in Thunder Bay on August 29th, 1960 to Harm and Tina Spithoff, who had just arrived in Canada from Holland. He attended Twin Haven school, afterwards moving on to work at Arc Industries.

Peter grew up on the Spithoff family farm where he and his brothers helped with various chores. If you knew Peter, you knew his real passions were bowling, dancing and swimming. Peter was a talented bowler who was very active in Special Olympics Bowling for many years, with the trophy collection to prove it. Peter also spent a lot of time involved with Wesway Respite groups - whether it be a day of swimming, or just a trip to McDonalds, he would look forward to outings with his friends. From Saturday night dances with Special Olympics to Summer in the Parks at the marina, Peter was always the first one on the dance floor and the last one to leave. His impressive Elvis Presley moves were always popular - especially with the ladies. In addition to Wesway, Peter was involved with Friendship Class at First Christian Reform Church, which gave him many fulfilling friendships and adventures throughout the years.

Peter was predeceased by his father Harm, and brothers Jack “Jake”, and Michael. He leaves behind his mother Tina, brothers Harold, John (Cathie) Spithoff, sister Amy Schilling, nieces Tamarra, Jacklyn & Katelyn Spithoff, and nephews Richard, Nick & Philip Spithoff, and Cory & Jake Schilling, in addition to several great nieces and nephews.

We would like to express great thanks to Wesway for the many years of support that Peter received through their programs, and a special thanks to Jessie of Wesway for the years of special companionship to Peter.

Thank you to all of the nursing staff and doctors at TBRHSC for doing all you could for Peter and a special thank you to nurses Gaby, Heather, Nicole & Sienna of 3A, you went above and beyond and your care and compassion were very comforting to our family, especially during Peter’s last days.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday June 28 th from 6pm-8pm and funeral service will be held on Wednesday June 29th at 11:00 am. Both being held at First Christian Reform Church, 9 Cooper Rd. (off Arthur St) Interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A luncheon will be held immediately following interment at First Christian Reform Church.

In lieu of flowers, donation can be made in Peters’ name to “Special Olympics Thunder Bay” or to “Wesway”.
