Reijo Haapaniemi
It is with great sadness that the family of Reijo Haapaniemi announces his passing on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 in St. Joseph’s Hospice.

Reijo was born on March 31, 1938 in Peraseinajoki, Finland. In May of 1956 at the age of 18, he arrived in Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay). Three days later he began working for Sillman Construction and continued there for 35 plus years as a truck driver and machine operator. He also worked for Craig Plumbing. For several years before he finally retired, he was employed by Matti Ahonen as a Backhoe Operator. He did all of the landscaping at Matti’s residence and for many cottage owners at Hawk Bay. Reijo was a member of Local Union 607, Laborers International Union of North America.

In 1975 Reijo and Elna purchased a summer camp at One Island Lake. This became their paradise and special place to enjoy with family and friends. Reijo particularly loved his bonfires and saunas. His hard work shines through the changes from past to present at camp.

In his younger years he enjoyed fishing and hunting, and in particular, partridge hunting. Over the years family and friends enjoyed many partridge dinners during the holidays. Smoking fish was an annual event for many years. Saving a few for himself, he enjoyed giving the remainder to family and friends. He always made sure there was an abundance of food and drink for everyone. One of Reijo’s passions was watching Formula One Racing on Sunday mornings.

Reijo will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Elna (August 12th would have been their 60th wedding anniversary); daughters Laura (Dale), Liisa (Darrell); grandsons Tyler (Maria), Derek; and grand-dog Louie. In Finland sisters Ritva (Juhani) and Sirpa; sister-in-law Raakel and their families. Also cousins and their families.

Reijo was predeceased by his parents Uuno and Laura; brother Keijo; and brother-in-law Raimo; numerous other relatives in Finland and Canada. As well by his loving grand-dog Paws.

A private celebration and burial will take place at a later date. Should friends so desire, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society or to St. Joseph’s Foundation designated to Hospice unit.

The family wishes to thank all the doctors, nurses and staff of St. Joseph’s Hospice, TBRHSC, Jessica at the LHIN, Bayshore Respite Care (especially Colleen). Your care and compassion made this difficult time easier for Elna and the girls.

Dad, Pappa – You are a beautiful, strong man. You will always be our rock. You are our heart and soul. You gave us many many blessings. We will miss you very, very much. Don’t worry we will look after mom. You will always be in our hearts forever.
