Renwick Ronald Craig passed away June 2nd, 2018 at TBRHSC with his wife by his side. He was born in Montreal on May 17th, 1940. From the beginning, he had an adventurous spirit. He would ride his bicycle all around Montreal by himself and befriended everyone. He had all the ladies making him fudge with his charismatic personality. He moved to Toronto when he was eight and continued his adventuresome explorations there. He would deliver newspapers in his neighbourhood and sing Ave Marie to his patrons looking for tips. He would sneak into the CLE under the gates and get into all of the shows for free.
He went to highschool at Lakefield College. In 1960, he went to London England on the Cunard Liner to work at Sanderson Wallpaper. In 1961, he was one of the first people to go to Russia, when intourist opened up, driving in an Austin Mini, though the Brandenburg Gate, through Poland to Moscow, where he ate champagne and caviar with the Russian Generals. He came back one week before the Berlin Wall went up. He returned to Canada and got his undergraduate degree at Carleton University. He was then accepted to the London School of Economics, but was unable to go. He then worked on his Masters Degree at Carleton on Lawrence of Arabia. As part of this research, he worked on a Kibutiz in Isreal and travelled on the Sinai Penninsula and scuba dived near Sharm-el-Sheik.
He then returned to Northern Ontario to teach Highschool and to be able to continue to enjoy the outdoors. While he was teaching in Geraldton, he enjoyed his summers as a teacher for Outward Bound and for the Highschool Outers Program. He met the love of his life, Anne-Ly Kald and married her in 1982. After moving to Thunder Bay, they continued sharing the adventures with extensive travelling to unique and exotic places. These included Hot Air Ballooning in Europe, sailing the Atlantic and Pacific in Winstar Sailing ships and numerous trips to Morroco and Egypt, the Silk Road Tours in China, multiple trips to Europe, Russia and Estonia. One of the crowning glories was the Rolling Stones Concert in London England where they stayed at the Ritz, followed two years later by attending the Celebration of the Queens’s Birthday party. In the later years, he loved his garden and his dogs continued to enjoy the outdoors with his dogs.
He is survived by his wife Anne-Ly of thirty-five years, brother Stephen (Dominique), sister Kimberly (Amara), brother in law Garry, (Cathy) and numerous nieces and nephews.
He has now moved on, to plan new adventures for when he is together again with soul mate. In lieu of flowers, people who wish may donate to the charity of their choice relating to animals or nature. A service to celebrate the life of Renwick Craig will be held on Friday, June 8, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, with Rev. Ed Long presiding.
