Peacefully, and surrounded by his loving family, Richard “Dick” Armstrong left his earthly presence on Thursday, March 8th, 2018. A dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Dick was a true mentor to his expansive family. He believed in teaching his loved ones to be self-sufficient and the traditional gender roles were not observed. If you had two hands, you could be taught to change a tire, fish for your dinner, cook, or sew. His family is so grateful for the example he set and the many skills he bestowed upon them.
In the community, Dick was known as a proficient square dance caller and instructor. He taught square dancing at many recreation centres in Fort William and Port Arthur, and later, the Thunder Bay area. He was also a master with a scroll saw, a hobby he thoroughly enjoyed until very recently. He has left behind a legacy of his intricate works of art for his many family members to enjoy and pass along for years to come.
Dick will be dearly remembered by his children Lea (Alfred), Constance (Robert), Carol (Scott), Inez (Murray), Rick (Susan), Diane (Ed), Shawn (Lori) and Scott (Lisa). A special place will live on for “Grandpa Dick” in the hearts of his 25 grandchildren, their partners, and 31 great-grandchildren. Dick was predeceased by the love of his life, Viola Armstrong; his daughter-in-law Susan Armstrong; grandchildren Russell Rikkonen and Amanda Clark; and great-grandchildren Riann Demianiuk and Kellen Demianiuk.
The Armstrong family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at the Chartwell Thunder Bay Retirement Residence, the staff at Hogarth Riverview Manor (5 south) and to Brandy Lagozzo from Nurse Next Door, for being a wonderful bright light in Dick’s life during last year.
A celebration of life will take place later in the Spring. Arrangements to be announced in advance. Online condolences may be offered at www.harbourviewfuneral.ca
