Rita Witiluk (nee Prezio) beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and dear friend, died peacefully on Tuesday March 26, 2024, in St. Joseph’s Hospital, at the age of 98.

Born on December 17, 1925, in Port Arthur, Rita was predeceased by her parents Luigi Prezio and Maria Sisco, and siblings Teresa Bottos (Joe), Edith McFarlane (John), John Prezio (Stella), Amadeo Prezio (Edna), and Ralph Prezio (Edda).

In 1947 she married the love of her life, William Witiluk, enjoying 50 wonderful years together. Her memory will live on in hearts of her surviving children Jack (Barb Dickson), Gerald (Jo Ann Cappello), Donna Deknatel (John) and Bill; grandchildren Jeff, Ryan, John, Matthew, David and Justin Deknatel and eleven great grandchildren.

When her husband William Witiluk passed away in 1998, Rita demonstrated incredible strength and resilience continuing to enjoy life with family and friends while living in her own home.

Rita was a devout Catholic, who cherished family and friends and prayed for them daily. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and revelled in the beauty of nature, finding solace in the outdoors and serenity walking amidst its wonders. Her lifelong passion for fitness and staying healthy began with always walking everywhere, attending aerobic classes at the YMCA in the 70s, learning to swim at 55 and regularly swimming and attending aqua fitness classes at the Canada Games Complex until 94. Rita’s presence was an inspiration to those around her, leaving unforgettable memories of her zest for life and commitment to healthy living. Her passage leaves a void that will be deeply felt by her extended family and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

While we mourn her loss, we find comfort in the enduring love and memories Rita leaves behind. As per her wishes, she was cremated. A mass to honour Rita’s life and a private interment will take place at a later date.

We wish to thank all those who helped the family fulfill Rita’s dream of living her life at home, especially Drs. Robrock and Migay, Melissa Gernat of Home and Community Care Support Services North West and the team of home care nurses, PSWs and therapists, Meals on Wheels, the emergency doctors and staff of 2B at Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre, the 5 North Rehab and 4 North Hospice staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Rest in peace, Dear Rita. Your love and light will forever guide us through the days ahead. You will be dearly missed, but your spirit will continue to live in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, donations can made in Rita’s memory to the Dew Drop Inn, St. Joseph’s Care Group, or the Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre. Please share condolences and memories at www.sargentandson.com.
