Mr. Roger Regis Lavoie, age 83 years, a resident of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully with his family at his side, in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Hospice Unit, on February 27, 2010.

Born in Ste. Donat, Quebec, November 16, 1926, Roger set out to Northern Ontario in the early 50’s where he met and married Francis Ibey.  Settling in Port Arthur they raised six children together.   As like most Canadians, hockey formed a great part of his early years. Whether cheering his beloved Montreal Canadians, coaching his sons and his fellow grain handlers, he showed great enthusiasm for the game.

Employed at Saskatchewan Wheat Pool for 37 years, he retired in 1988. A retirement gift of golf clubs awakened his passion for the sport and he could often be found golfing with his buddies Ron and Jeff.  While spending time with his family was one of his biggest joys, Roger also developed a love for travelling to numerous sunny destinations.

Roger is lovingly remembered by his children; Ed (Mona), Ted (Daphne), Brian (Francine), Robert (Jane), Michele McElroy (Kelly), Cynthia Jordan (Jerry); close friend and companion Jenny ; grandchildren Stephanie, Brent,  Jennifer, Mark, Ben, Christopher, Joshua, Jonathan, Mitchell, Keith, Billy,  and Shaylyn; great grandchildren Rebecca, Cole, Emily, and Abbigayle; numerous nieces, nephews and his large extended family.  Roger was predeceased by his wife Francis and grandson Nathan, father Isidore and mother Rose-Delima Dube, sisters Jeanne D’Arc, Louiselle, and brother Maurice.

Following cremation, Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 4th, 2010, in the Chapel of  Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, presided by Rev. Fr. Richard Kowalchuk of Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church.  Visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the time of Service.  If friends so desire, donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made in Roger’s memory to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation designated to the Northern Cancer Fund, or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
