Posted

Mrs. Shirley Douglas-Menuz, age 73 years, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 in St. Joseph's Hospice.

Shirley was born February 7, 1938 in Port Arthur. She attended Oliver Road Public School, Port Arthur Technical Institute and Confederation College. She was employed by Northern Wood Preservers, retiring in 1993 after 30 years of service.

Shirley was very active within her church. She was a member of the Corpus Christi C.W.L. for over 50 years serving as treasurer and secretary/membership convener. She was also a Eucharistic Minister and Minister of Service. Shirley served as past president of the Arthritis Society and headed the first door to door campaign during her term.

She loved golfing and was known as “Boomer” to all her golf friends. She enjoyed needlework and was always up for a good game of cards. In recent years, she joined the bridge group at Oliver Road Rec. where she met her husband Greg. She was an avid player, participating in marathons and tournaments. If she wasn’t playing cards, she was curled up with a good book, often preparing for discussions with her book club.

For the past 18 years, Shirley spent the winter months in Mesa, Arizona where she made many close friends. In the summer months, she enjoyed Sundays at the lake with Joanne and Ken.

Shirley will be remembered by her daughter Joanne and her family Ken and Ashley Lagg; husband Greg Menuz and his family Kim, Darcy and Rory Jeffers and David and Giles Menuz; brother Russell (Lorraine) Bright; brothers and sisters-in-law Shirley Vanderwey, David (Rosalie) Douglas, Doreen (Ernie) Oakley, George Wigmore, Bud MacMillan, Hilka Douglas, Bill Danchuk, and Gordon Menuz. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Predeceased by her first love and husband Jim (May 1998); parents Les and Mae Bright; one brother in infancy; brothers and sisters-in-law Don Douglas, Gus Vanderwey, Ellen MacMillan, Margaret Wigmore and Bev Danchuk.

Funeral services for the late Mrs. Shirley Douglas-Menuz will be held on Monday, April 4, 2011 with family and friends gathering in Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church for the Funeral Mass at 2 p.m. celebrated by Fr. Richard Kowalchuk. Interment to follow in St. Andrew's Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday evening after 7:30 p.m. in the Everest Funeral Chapel, 299 Waverley St. at Algoma with the Vigil Prayers offered at 8:30 p.m.
