Sirkka Kainulainen

With great sadness the family of Sirkka Tuulikki Kainulainen announces her passing on Friday March 17, 2017.

Sirkka was born January 18, 1951 in Oulu, Finland to Bruno and Helmi Ranni. The family moved to Canada when she was a year old, eventually settling in Tarmola, just outside Thunder Bay.

Sirkka was raising her two young daughters, Sandy and Terry, when she met the love of her life, Leonard Kainulainen. The two were married in 1982, and later welcomed son Craig and daughter Kaylin.

Sirkka’s vibrant spirit and zest for life were always evident. Whether singing, crafting, gardening, baking, playing with her grandkids, cheering on her kids at the hockey arena, playing rummoli with the neighbourhood ladies, or camping and fishing with the family, she approached everything with enthusiasm and a great sense of humour.

She took great pride in returning to school later in life and pursuing a career as a personal support worker. It was through this work that her kindness and generosity were extended beyond her own family to help and care for others in need.

Even through hardships, Sirkka exuded strength, bravery, and grace. She selflessly focused her concern on those closest to her, while maintaining a positive outlook and appreciating the value of a good laugh.

Sirkka will be dearly missed by her husband, Leonard; children Sandy, Terry (Mitchell), Craig (Becca), and Kaylin; grandchildren Ben, Riley, and Max; siblings Arvo (Lena), Raija, Raili (Allan), Kauko, Guy (Liisa), and Karl; in-laws Eileen (Tom), Larry, Janet (Bob), Sue, and Ron; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Sirkka was predeceased by her parents and her sister Ritva.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 24, 2017 in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, presided by Pastor Jari Lahtinen of Hilldale Lutheran Church. Visitation will begin one hour prior, at 1:00 p.m.
