Sofus Jensen, of Pass Lake, ON passed away peacefully early morning on June 4, 2015. Born in Skanderborg, Denmark in 1919, to Godfred and Ella Jensen, he was the second born of six children.

Sofus described his family as proud and his childhood as filled with wonderful memories. At the age of 14, like many young men of the time, he was sent to live and work on a farm. In his early twenties, he tried his hand at coal mining, but chose to venture off to Sweden where he lived and worked as farm hand for the next several years.

During this time, Sofus remained in contact with his childhood friends Aage and Peter Nielsen. In the early 1950’s, they ultimately persuaded him to come to Canada to the developing Danish community of Pass Lake. This community would become his lifelong home.

Whether it was working in Sibley Provincial Park, digging wells, or helping a local carpenter to build a home, Sofus was always available to lend a helping hand. His love of fishing, hunting and sharing beers and BS with the locals gave him the most joy.

Most recently, he was renowned for his immaculate gardens. He enjoyed selling his vegetables to friends, neighbours and many campers from Silver Islet, which he did up until a few short years ago.

Even though he never married, there have been many families throughout the years who have adopted him as one of their own. He held a special bond with generations of children who lovingly referred to him as “Papa”.

Sofus kept in close contact with his family in Denmark through visits, phone calls and letters. He cherished such communications from his nieces, nephews and friends during the last years of his life when he lived at Grandview Home for the Aged.

Sofus has requested that no funeral be held. A private internment will take place at Pass Lake Cemetery. Donations in his name can be made to the Pass Lake Fire Station.

To Doug G. and all of Sofus’ “girlfriends” at Grandview Home for the Aged, there are no words great enough to express our gratitude, for the exemplary care you provided, and for always going above and beyond.
