It is with great sadness and sorrow that the Quarrell family announces the passing away of Susan Ann Quarrell (nee Santin) on Wednesday, August 18th, in Thunder Bay, at the age of 63 years.
Susan passed away peacefully with the support and love of her family after a courageous and valiant battle with cancer.
Susan was born on Dec. 1, 1957 and attended St. Martin’s, St. Pat’s and Westgate High School. She graduated from Lakehead University, and quickly entered the workforce as a nurse that spanned 36 years. She began her career in Kamloops, moved to Winnipeg, and eventually moved back to Thunder Bay where she worked almost entirely in the ICU wards at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Port Arthur General and Thunder Bay Regional Hospital. She was a dedicated employee that rarely missed a shift, as her skill, knowledge and commitment to the profession was truly respected by her colleagues and friends. She worked the majority of her career during the midnight shift, making the sacrifice to sleep during the day, and awaken when the children got off the school bus, to help them with their homework, practice the piano and feed and prepare them for extracurricular activities during the evening hours.
Susan was a quietly private, passionate, generous individual who lived her life with grace and a dedication to her family. She was the matriarch of the family, inviting family and friends for dinner, to enjoy food filled with interesting conversations and widespread humour. She was a hard-working mother who unconditionally cared for her children who were the centre of her life.
Susan loved to cross stich, read books, cross country ski, golf and camp outdoors, but most of all she enjoyed time with family and friends. After retirement, she enjoyed travelling with friends, cruises, sporting events and concerts. She also became a better fisherman in retirement, but still had difficulties positioning the leech on the hook.
She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her husband of 37 years, Barry, and her three children: Nathaniel, Kaitlyn (Daniel) and Matthew; her siblings Larry, David, Lori (Schweiger) and Jamie; her sisters-in law Lori McKay and Tracy Quarrell and her bothers-in law Bob Schwieger and Andrew Quarrell; her nieces Kyra, Leya, Reeve and nephews Turner, Cale, Eric, Maverick, Mason and Jordan, as well as her aunt Pat Carli and her father-in-law John Quarrell.
Susan was predeceased by her parents Elso and Eda Santin, as well as her mother-in-law Delpha Quarrell.
Susan’s family would like to express their thanks and appreciation to the staff at the Regional Cancer Clinic, St. Joseph Hospice, as well as Bayshore for their compassion and care. Thank you to all the doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and personal support workers (thanks Carrie) that provided empathy and kindness.
