Mrs. Sylvia Mychasiw, age 79 years, passed away on December 24, 2017 at Pioneer Ridge Long Term Care Facility with family by her side.

Sylvia was born and raised in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay), Ontario. After completing high school, Sylvia began her working career at the Port Arthur General Hospital. From there she began working for Dr. Evan Powell, Eye Specialist, during which she trained as his ophthalmic assistant. Sylvia worked for Dr. Powell for 29 years until they both retired. Sylvia was not one to be idle, so she joined the staff at Harbourview Funeral Centre for the next ten plus years until she finally retired.

Sylvia was a passionate animal lover and over the years raised Butch, Cynders and her two German Shepherds, Laurie and Siggy.

In her earlier years, Sylvia was very involved with her Church and with the various Church functions. Sylvia enjoyed bowling and golfing and going to Bingo with her sister Mary Ann. Sylvia also enjoyed going to a casino with her favorite location being Las Vegas where she went many times either with family or with friends. Sylvia was an avid fan of the Blue Jays, being able to watch them play twice in Toronto with her sister Mary Ann.

Sylvia will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband Edward Mychasiw, sister Mary Ann Porichuk and brother Peter Porichuk (Betty) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Sylvia was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Anna Porichuk, brother Steven Porichuk and sister Stella Kusznier.

Sylvia was well loved and respected by all. She was a sophisticated and independent lady who was very appreciative of life and all that it could give. She had that million dollar smile everyone loved and one that was infectious. She smiled so you smiled.

Over the last few years, Alzheimer’s disease began to erase her memories and her thoughts and her ability to function at a quality of life that she deserved. However, her ability to smile and laugh through these last years continued, a quality her family and friends will never forget.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre presided by Rev. Msgr. P.M. Stilla, V.G. of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Visitation will begin one hour prior, at 12:00 Noon with cremation to follow the service. Interment will take place at a later date.

Should friends so desire, donations may be made in Sylvia’s memory to the Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay or to the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society.
