Topi Sakari Vahaaho

Mr. Topi Sakari Vahaaho, age 73 years passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 7, 2015 in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Topi was born in 1941 in Sievi, Finland to Valio and Hanna (Wilen) Vahaaho. The family came to Canada in 1957. Topi worked for years as a carpenter for various construction companies. He loved spending time with his family and was especially proud of his grandchildren’s accomplishments. Relaxing in the sauna at camp was a favourite pastime. In his retirement, he enjoyed his coffee mornings with his lifelong friends.

Topi is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Vappu, daughter Christina (John) Kantyluk, son Raymond (Judy) of Quesnel, B.C., grandchildren Derek, Katie, Erica and Emily, brother Jouko (Audrey) of Nelson, B.C., sister-in-law Kaija (Unto) Hiiback as well as numerous nieces, nephews along with other relatives in Finland.

Topi was predeceased by his parents Valio and Hanna, brother Vesa in infancy and in-laws Erkki and Siiri Latvio.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at the Hilldale Lutheran Church, 321 Hilldale Road officiated by Rev. Jari Lahtinen. Visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hilldale Lutheran Church or to the Charity of your Choice.
