It is with sadness we announce the passing of our mom, Vera McKenzie at the age of 102 years, on Tuesday, November 2, 2021.

Vera is survived by her two daughters, Judy (Dave) Gerry and Susan (Jay) Childs, three grandchildren, Jayson (Deanna) Childs, Brenda Gerry, and Jarron (Eilidh) Childs, and two great grandchildren, Callan and Arran Childs.

She is also survived by her cousin, Dorothy Nepjuk as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

Vera was born in Devon, England on July 2, 1919, and came to Canada at a very early age. She was predeceased by her soulmate, our dad, Bill McKenzie, whom she has missed every day since he passed in 2009. She was also predeceased by her parents, Ethel and Albert Keehn, her sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Ken Dargavel and her brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Joan Keehn.

Mom was basically a stay at home mom, other than a short 9 year stint working in Eaton’s Bargain basement, for which she collected a pension for well over 55 years! Her life centred around our family and was always there for our dad and us. When the grandchildren came along, she was there doing whatever she could to help.

Mom’s life revolved around dad, whether she was fixing his football referee uniform, picking up new laces for his hockey skates or keeping his dinner warm when one of his friends would come by the house at 5:00 p.m. to get their house plans changed – mom just did it all. They were inseparable and many will remember how well they skated together (with mom in her speed skates) at Grandview Arena on Sunday evenings.

Life on River Street was not the same after dad passed away, so in 2017 mom moved to the Walford where she made many friends and kept the staff on their toes all the time.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 8, at Lakeview Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. Those wishing to attend will require proof of vaccination along with proper identification. Masks are mandatory. Those unable to attend the services are invited to go the Sargent and Son Facebook page where livestream of the service will be available to view. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lakeview Presbyterian Church or a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.

We miss you mom, but are happy that you are with dad.
