Walter Caland, 81 of Shuniah passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, June 12, 2019.

Walter was born in Fort William and was a life-long resident of the area, except for a year spent in Kamloops. At an early age, his passion was car racing. He competed in many races at the CLE Grounds. A mechanic by trade, he began working with Timberland-Elacott and eventually retired from Great Lakes Forest Products, Woodlands Division in 1994. After working for many years in the bush, Walter developed a passion for the outdoors – especially fishing and camping. The family spent many years camping at Grand Marais, beginning in the early 1970’s. Walter and Lorraine purchased a boat in 1990 and spent the next 15 years aboard The Blue Lady on Lake Superior. Walter and Lorraine have enjoyed the last 12 summers in Grand Marais in their fifth-wheel. Tuesday was spent preparing their camper for the season. In 1981, Walter began to golf with the Emerald Greens Mens Club and the next year he introduced his son Barry to the game.

Walter is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lorraine (nee Barbini), his son Barry (wife Pam and son Evan), his daughter Dauna Harwood (husband Bob and her children Brandon, Autumn, Summer and Tyler), his daughter Rhonda Therriault (and her children Jonathon and Krystle), and numerous great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his mother and father, sister Jeanette and brother-in-law Wilf Kramer. He was also predeceased by his mother and father-in-law Katherine and Fred Barbini as well as brother-in-law Edward Danelisky.

As per Walter’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no service will be held. A private celebration of life will be held in the future. If so desired, donations can be made to the Dew Drop Inn or to Shelter House. Please do something nice for someone today. Buy a stranger a coffee; or ask someone how their day is. Pay it forward.
