Wayne Hurley

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Wayne Hurley on March 26th following a three-year journey with cancer. Wayne was a kind and gentle man, a friend to many, and the best husband, father, grandpa, son, and big brother.

Over the course of his forty-year career as a Civil Engineer and a member of the PEO, he touched the lives of many people in his roles as consultant, mentor, teacher, colleague, manager and most importantly, friend. He loved solving technical problems and enjoyed brainstorming with his TBT Engineering colleagues even after retirement. 

Wayne and Brenda loved to travel and were fortunate to have enjoyed many fantastic trips and adventures over the years with special friends; especially the post-retirement winters spent in Mexico.

Sailing was one of Wayne’s passions. He enjoyed nothing more than a day on the lake with the motor off and the sails up, enjoying the quiet. Race night on Wednesday was one of the few reasons he made sure to leave the office early! He was an active member of the Thunder Bay Yacht Club for many years. 
Wayne’s other passion was food. He loved a great meal with a glass of red wine and good company. He was also a wonderful cook who truly enjoyed creating memorable and delicious meals for friends and family. 

Wayne will be lovingly remembered and missed by his family; wife, Brenda, his son Scott, daughter-in-law Laura and their children, Julia and Ada; his daughter Allison and her partner, Orkun. He also leaves his parents, Bob and Blanche Hurley, his sisters Karen (Dennis) and Susan (Paul) and his nieces, Kendra and Rhea. He will also be missed by his in-laws and his nephews as well as his father-in-law, Al Chaisson. Wayne was pre-deceased by his sister, Diane, and little brother, Daryl.

Thank you to Dr. Adrien Chan, Kim and all the caring staff at the Thunder Bay Regional Cancer Centre for their kindness and support during this journey. A special thank you to Dr. Yoo-Joung Ko, Christina and Kate at Sunnybrook Hospital for their exemplary care. We always left our appointments with a sense of calmness and optimism. Thank you to the staff at St. Joseph’s Hospice for their compassion and gentleness while caring for Wayne. Lastly, thank you to Wayne’s home care team from Bayshore Healthcare, especially Kathleen for her friendship and the wonderful care.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Wayne’s memory to the Northern Cancer Fund; St. Joseph’s Foundation or the charity of your choosing.
