William Sutton

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. Mr. William Terrence Sutton, better known as “Terry” has passed away peacefully with his family by his side on February 9, 2022 at the age of 80.

Terry was born in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay, ON). He moved to Alexander Landing at the age of three, he attended the Cameron Falls School until he moved to Nipigon when he was ten years old. He attended George O’Neill Public School, Nip-Rock High School and finished his high school in Thunder Bay. Terry’s first job was at the Dept. of Highways, shovelling gravel, within a month he was working at the Multiply Plywood Mill in Nipigon where he worked as a petty bone operator for ten years. Terry received the Honourable G. Davis, Prime Minister and Honourable Jack McNeil, College & Universities Award for the highest marks in Advanced Electrical and Construction Maintenance, with an Inner Provincial ticket while working for the Multiply Plywood’s Ltd. were he continued to work until 1982. He then went to work at the Domtar Packing Mill (Norampac) in Red Rock, ON where he worked until his retirement in 2006.

Terry was known for his excellence in his electrical trouble shooting at the mill and his dedication to his job. He was also known for his hot temper and his “to the point attitude”, “THINK ABOUT IT”, because of this he was referred to and was proud of his nick name, “Grumpy #1” by the boys in the Electrical Dept. at the Norampac Mill in Red Rock. He owned his own Electrical Business called “Terry’s Electrical” and later changed it to “North Shore Electrical Ltd.”

Terry was a happy fun loving family man who was always joking and teasing. Terry met his wife Phyllis when she was six years old and he was the ripe old age of nine when her family moved in next door at Alexander Landing. They were married twelve years later, and they had two wonderful sons David and Wayne whom they loved dearly. They then bought a little white house. Years later they built a new home on the same property and that’s when Terry really started taking his wood working serious. He enjoyed spending time in his workshop, whittling on his wood carvings, furniture and toys. Terry got his own logs from the bush, sawed them into lumber with his saw mill, and then made furniture, toys and nick-knacks for the yard. Family and friends enjoyed many hours talking with Terry in his shop. Terry also loved to go camping, fishing, hunting, with his wife Phyllis, the boys David, Wayne and their families, his brother-in-law Don and his friends, Smiley and Kim Ray. He loved our family gatherings and enjoyed the closeness of everyone; he will be greatly missed by all who was part of his life.

Terry is survived by his life-long partner, of 59 years, best friend, and loving soul mate, his wife, Phyllis P. Sutton (nee: Jubinville), whom he loved dearly. Two sons whom he loved unconditionally and was very proud of, David (Marry Ann) Sutton and Wayne (Kim) Sutton both of Thunder Bay, ON.

Terry loved and took much pleasure in his six grandchildren, Christopher Sutton, Brian (Camille) Sutton, Catherine (Michael) Sutton-Baker, Brittany, Jessica and Rebecca Sutton, all of Thunder Bay, ON.

He spent many pleasurable hours with his great-grandchildren Bradly, Maverick, Victoria, Phoenix, Selene, Dean, Eddy, Liam, and the newest member Kiesa.

Also surviving are two sisters. Betty Lou (Tony) Morki, Toronto, Dixie (Bud) Graman, Fanny Bay, BC. two brothers; Fred (Jane) Sutton, of Ottawa, ON. Tom (Leona) Sutton of Nipigon, One Brother-in-law, Jerry (June) Jubinville of Logan Lake, BC., Sister-in-Law, Karen Jubinville of Golden, BC, and Sister-in-law Elain Jubinville of Sparwood, BC.

Special thanks to the Ambulance Service Paramedics, OPP Officer for his gentle care of Terry on his final ride, Doctors, Nurses and staff at Nipigon District Memorial Hospital for their devoted care of Terry during his final days. On a lighter note I’m sure Terry would like to apologize for the Tarzan act on his curtain in his room.
