HAMILTON — Provincial police closed the Burlington Skyway and the Garden City Skyway on Wednesday due to high winds.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says the closures of the bridges in Hamilton and St. Catharines, Ont., came after the wind toppled a transport truck on the Burlington Skyway.

The Burlington Skyway reopened to traffic after a closure of about five hours, while the Garden City Skyway was closed for about an hour.

Schmidt says the trailer was empty and the driver and his co-driver were not seriously injured.

The driver told police that the wind caught the back of the trailer he was hauling and "rolled it over like a wave."

Forecasters said strong southwesterly winds of 60 kilometres per hour with gusts to 100 kilometres per hour buffeted the region Wednesday afternoon.
