Fire forces evacuation of southern Ontario hospital

PORT PERRY, Ont. — Officials at a southern Ontario hospital had to evacuate the facility when a fire broke out on the roof Friday night.

PORT PERRY, Ont. — Officials at a southern Ontario hospital had to evacuate the facility when a fire broke out on the roof Friday night.

Durham Region Police tweeted that the fire at Lakeridge Health in Port Perry was quickly contained and no patients were injured.

But police say patients were taken to other hospitals because of smoke throughout the building.

Toronto television station CP24 interviewed witnesses at the scene who said that some patients had to be wheeled out of the health centre to the parking lot in their hospital beds.

The hospital has been shut down.
