Toronto police say a Hamilton man was fatally shot while sitting in his car, waiting for his friend in a plaza parking lot.

Investigators were called to the scene at about 9:30 p.m. Friday, after someone reported the sound of gunshots.

Emergency personnel arrived and found the man injured.

Leonard Pinnock, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are asking those who lives in the area of the shooting to check their backyards for any discarded items that don't belong to them — keys, cellphones or anything else that a person might carry in their pocket.

Officers say several suspects were seen fleeing the area.
