TORONTO — The mayor of Toronto has announced a series of measures to tackle traffic problems in the city.
The plan includes full-time traffic wardens at problematic intersections, squads to clear blocked lanes on major roads and sharing city traffic data with a popular traffic and navigation app called Waze.
Mayor John Tory says the city is also installing so-called smart signals that can adapt in real-time to changing traffic situations.
He says he is also examining increased fines for those who block traffic.
The announcement coincides with a Toronto police blitz on traffic and parking offences zeroing in on gridlock in the downtown core.
Police say they've issued more than 57,000 parking tickets and towed nearly 12,000 vehicles since the beginning of the year.
